The Principle of Hapkido

The principle of Hapkido is based on the principle of ‘Hwa', ‘Won', ‘Ryu'. When you have all of these principles, you can say that as the right Hapkido. The motions of Hapkido are going to be right when you use circle, flow and achieve harmony with your opponent, or in the harmony, use circle and flow.

It is not important as to which one you use first, you should combine and use them together.

There are three important basic principle of Hapkido:

•

The principle of circle:
When you are in situations dealing with opponents, all movements are round, in circle-motion; do not oppose the opponent's force directly. You circle and spin your opponent to get him off balance.

•

The principle of harmony:
When you are in situations dealing with opponents, you merge yourself and your opponent into one, to make mental and bodily harmony with opponent. It means, if pushed, you give way. If pulled, you go to the attacker.

•

The principle of flowing:
When you are in situations dealing with opponents, you strive to be like water, you flow around your opponent and to shift your weight like waves splashing down on him. You reach the spot that you can attack the opponent and concentrate on your force, which is needed for attack.
